Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal says he will speak to his assistant Ryan Giggs about reports linking him to Swansea's managerial vacancy.

Giggs is one of a number of names being linked with the job following Garry Monk's departure from the Liberty Stadium on Wednesday.

"First I have to speak to Ryan Giggs by himself if it's true," Van Gaal said.  "And [in that case], he's coming to me.  I cannot speak about 'if'. The 'if' situations."

Harry Redknapp, the former West Ham, Portsmouth and Tottenham manager, wrote on his Twitter account: "Hearing talk of Giggsy for the Swansea job.

"It'd be a big step up, not easy to manage a Prem club. Garry Monk will have learnt an awful lot."

Former United manager David Moyes has ruled himself out of the running but one man who Sky sources understand is interested is Gus Poyet.

It is understood the former Sunderland and Brighton manager, currently in charge at AEK Athens, has not yet been approached by the Welsh club.

Ostersunds manager Graham Potter is a surprise contender for the job, but former Swans boss Brendan Rodgers has already ruled himself out of the running and Moyes has joined him in declaring his disinterest.

Moyes told talkSPORT: "I'm not interested in the job, I let it be known earlier in the week that it wasn't for me.

"When I was in Spain, I was getting offered numerous jobs to come back to England. And since I've lost my job I've had several offers to come back here, as well as offers to go back abroad.

"I want to spend Christmas at home with the family if I can, but if the right job comes up that really excites me, I'm ready to go. I don't need a rest or a break, but I want to make sure the job is the right one."

Monk lost his job after Swansea's run of just one win in their last 11 Premier League games, but Moyes thinks he was unfortunate to lose his job after their highest-ever Premier League finish of eighth last season.

He said: "Swansea have had a really good model, but if you ask people where you would expect Swansea to finish - and I know they were exceptional in the last few years - I think most people would say that if they could even get close to the top-half, they'd be doing well.

"Garry is a young manager who had a good year. He was having a sticky patch like Jose Mourinho (at Chelsea) and should have been given the chance to put it right.

"But the job for managers is nearly impossible now and, because of that, I think we've lost the plot a wee bit over the whole situation.

"It's difficult to have stability or vision at any club. I was fortunate to have my best years early on at Everton, but I had one good year and then one bad year until we sorted it out and got stable."
