Prior to his dismissal, Paul Clement told Sky Sports News he felt he had the backing of the Swansea board

Paul Clement was confident he would be given more time to turn Swansea's fortunes around.

Clement was sacked by the Swans on Wednesday night with the club two points adrift at the bottom of the Premier League, following a 3-1 defeat to Everton on Monday.

Speaking prior to his dismissal on Wednesday afternoon, Clement denied he was on the cusp of being sacked and that he expected the club's board to back him in the January window.

"I have always had an open dialect with the ownership group here and the chairman - a good relationship," said Clement.

"I know what football is about. It is about getting results and winning. I'm sure if I can get the team to do that then I am going to be okay here."

Clement admitted Swansea's results this season have not been good enough, but backed the team to produce a repeat of last year, where they avoided relegation after a strong finish to the campaign.

"The statistics are not very good if you're bottom at Christmas. It is going to be a big ask but the fact that we did it as recent as last season gives you great belief and confidence," said Clement.

"We certainly are going to have play better if we're going to get some points on the board and make it realistic that we're going to stay up again.

"You have to think positively. One thing is for sure, if you don't believe that you can do it then you won't do it. I believe I can, I believe there is a lot of players in the dressing room who think they can because they've been through that experience.

"We need to strengthen, we need a couple of players to help, but we move forward in a positive and focused manner."

Clement admitted the summer departures of Gylfi Sigurdsson and Fernando Llorente had been detrimental to his side this season but was confident of reinforcing his squad in January.

"Llorente was a big difference maker for us last year and so was Gylfi," said Clement.

"They're not here now, we can't dwell on the past, we have to move forward with the players that we have and hopefully a couple of good players coming in, in January."
