Bournemouth are awaiting confirmation on the severity of Jermain Defoe's ankle injury suffered in the Carabao Cup against Chelsea on Wednesday night.

Defoe was forced to come off 16 minutes into Bournemouth's 2-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge, having received treatment two minutes into the match after being brought down by Chelsea's Ethan Ampadu.

Eddie Howe revealed after the game that the club are waiting for further news on the injury, but said he may have damaged the ligaments in his ankle.

When asked about the severity of Defoe's injury, Howe said: "It looks like an ankle twist I'm not sure, it looks like it could be ligaments but it's too early to tell on that."

Howe also said midfielder Harry Arter sustained a calf injury during the defeat, he was replaced by Lewis Cook after 74 minutes.

"We lost Harry Arter as well with a calf problem. We are really stretched with our resources, we've got a number of injuries so hopefully they are not too bad," added Howe.
