Bournemouth captain Simon Francis has signed a one-year contract extension with the club.

The 33-year-old, who had one year remaining on his previous deal, has agreed terms which keeps him at the Vitality Stadium until the end of the 2019-2020 season.

Francis has made 286 appearances for the Cherries since joining from Charlton Athletic in 2011, playing a key role in their rise from League One to the top flight.

The defender missed just six Premier League games this season as Bournemouth finished 12th, 11 points clear of the relegation zone.

Francis told the club's website: "I'm delighted to sign a new deal and am really looking forward to the next two years.

"The most important thing was to retain our Premier League status for another year and then once that was achieved it was a chance to sit down and discuss things.

"It all happened fairly quickly because negotiations don't take too long when a player wants to stay at the club.
