Paulo Di Canio's representative has denied he contacted Rotherham over their vacant manager's position.

The Press Association reported on Monday that Di Canio's agent approached the Millers about his client succeeding Steve Evans, who left the club by mutual consent on Monday.

PA reported that Rotherham rejected that approach, insisting they have no interest in the 47-year-old - who had controversial stints in charge of Swindon and Sunderland.

But his agent told Sky Sports News HQ: "We have not been in contact with Rotherham about Paolo.

"However, Di Canio does have a close relationship with Rotherham.

"He was sent to the stands when he was Swindon manager and sat next to the Rotherham chairman - and they've been friends ever since."

Di Canio has been out of work since he was sacked by Sunderland in December 2013 after just 13 games in charge, following an intervention to the club's board by senior players.

Earlier that year, in March, he has resigned as boss of Swindon despite leading them to promotion to League One the previous season, with the club in the midst of a takeover from new owners.

On Monday, previous Rotherham boss Evans told Sky Sports News HQ he wants an immediate return to management.
