Sky Sports News HQ understands Adebayo Akinfenwa will be released by AFC Wimbledon after Monday’s League Two play-off final, regardless of the result.

The 34-year old, who is out of contract this summer, will not be offered a new deal by the club, although he is expected to play on elsewhere for another two seasons.

Akinfenwa - nicknamed 'The Beast' due to his considerable frame - has scored seven goals this season, including the strike that forced extra-time against Accrington in the play-off semi-finals.

However, Sky sources have confirmed Akinfenwa will not be given the chance to extend his spell with AFC Wimbledon, whether or not they clinch promotion to League One.

Speaking to the FL72 Podcast this week, Akinfenwa admitted he has been frustrated not to have started as many games this season as he would have liked.

"I've found it difficult initially" Akinfenwa said. "I had a lot of talks with the gaffer, I wasn't used to sitting on the bench.

"It was a process, it was hard for me, I had to get my mind right. I had to work harder, pray harder, but I have said that there shouldn't be one player bigger than the team.

"As much as it was hard and I was biting my tongue and giving the gaffer a few 'dirty looks', the team comes first."
