Morecambe have announced Brazilian businessman Diego Lemos has completed a takeover of the club subject to English Football League approval.

The Shrimps' current owner and chairman Peter McGuigan, who put the club up for sale in March, confirmed in April that talks were progressing well and that he hoped to have completed the deal by the end of May.

"Morecambe Football Club have (on Thursday) announced that Brazilian businessman Diego Lemos has acquired a majority shareholding in Morecambe Football Club Ltd, subject to EFL consent," read a brief statement on the club's official website.

McGuigan has been chairman and majority shareholder at Morecambe for 16 years and oversaw the club's relocation from their old ground Christie Park to the Globe Arena in 2010.

He revealed in March that the club were "virtually debt-free" and that "the time is right for a new owner to take the club forward and build on a strong platform".

McGuigan guided Morecambe to the Football League for the first time in 2007 following their play-off final win against Exeter and the club have been in League Two ever since.

Manager Jim Bentley took charge of the club's on-field fortunes in May 2011 following the departure by mutual consent of former boss Sammy McIlroy.
