Leyton Orient fans invaded and protested on the pitch late on in their game against Colchester, forcing the game to be abandoned

Leyton Orient completed their home season just before 7pm after fan protests held up their defeat to Colchester.

Relegated Orient were trailing 3-1 in the League Two game when a pitch invasion forced the players off with six minutes remaining.

The game was initially 'abandoned' at 5.49pm, but the players re-emerged an hour later to finish the formalities in front of empty stands.

An EFL statement released as play resumed said: "The Sky Bet League Two fixture between Leyton Orient and Colchester United is being concluded behind closed doors.

"The decision to play the match to a conclusion has been agreed with both managers and with the referees support. The Police and Stadium security staff were happy for the match to restart and this took place a few a moments ago.

"Despite requests for the fans to clear the pitch, there wasn't insufficient movement to allow the game to restart following a pitch invasion. A decision was taken with the Police to announce that the game had been abandoned, as it was felt this would help clear the pitch, which proved correct.

"However, it was felt that the game needs to be played to a conclusion in order to maintain the integrity of the competition and in respect of Colchester United's position of being able to qualify for the Sky Bet League Two play-offs."

The final minutes were completed in non-competitive fashion and Orient manager Omer Riza explained what occurred afterwards.

"The EFL came down. They sat and spoke with the officials and the managers and said we had to come up with a plan, to make sure the game finished," said Riza.

"No one wants to come back and play six, seven minutes next week so the only way we were going to disperse the fans was to say the game was cancelled. It was a solution the EFL came up with and we agreed.

"I spoke with John McGreal, their manager, and we said we would play normally.

"But I think the players went out there and decided to, maybe it was hard for them to warm up, to get back into the speed off the game, so they thought they would see the game out."

Orient supporters were protesting against the ownership of Francesco Becchetti, who has overseen two relegations in three seasons, the latest of which ends their 112-year stay in the Football League.

As for Colchester, victory keeps them one point off the play-off places heading into their final game against Yeovil next Saturday.

Tarique Fosu, Chris Porter and Macauley Bonne scored the visitors' goals in east London, Sandro Semedo briefly drawing Orient level in the second half.
