Northern Ireland striker on trial at Blundell Park

Grimsby Town have handed a trial to former Sheffield United and Preston North End striker Andy Smith. The Northern Irishman has linked up with the Mariners as manager Mike Newell looks to improve his attacking options. Smith has had several previous attempts to crack English football, having initially joined Sheffield United in 1999 from Ballyclare. He returned to Northern Ireland before signing for Preston in 2004 from Glentoran, only to again struggle to make an impact. The 28-year-old is currently on the books of Portadown, but sat out most of last season after the club's relegation from the top flight. Smith had been tipped to join Ballymena United, but he has now been offered the chance to secure a move to Blundell Park.
