Rangers manager Mark Warburton has defended his unbeaten side after they came in for criticism following their narrow 2-1 defeat of 10-man Dumbarton last weekend.

The Glasgow side went into the match on the back of six straight league wins and two goals from Martyn Waghorn, one from the penalty spot, saw them extend their 100 per cent record against Stevie Aitken's side at the Cheaper Insurance Direct Stadium.

Rangers have scored 24 goals and conceded just four in the Scottish Championship and Warburton insists a drop off in the high standards set in the opening six games was only to be expected.

Speaking on the eve of their League Cup match against Premiership side St Johnstone on Tuesday, the former Brentford manager said: "People keep saying to me we were shocking. Apparently we were awful at Dumbarton, winning 2-1 away.

"But if that is how it is perceived then fantastic. Within the camp here we are happy. We had an inquest because we know our standards.

"To me there were a couple of areas where we fell short in but that's human nature. You are not going to be 100 per cent every single day of the week.

"But what you can do is try and work hard every day of the week and if things don't work out for you, you try and learn from them and correct them.

"So I am delighted. We trained this morning, we were sharp, we were strong and we are ready for tomorrow night."
