Hibernian continue to look best equipped to challenge Rangers for the Scottish Championship title after their 4-2 win over Dumbarton.

Raith are the side lying second, nine points behind the Ibrox outfit, following their late win at Alloa Athletic.

But it's Hibs - two points behind the Kirkcaldy side but with a game in hand to play - who appear the biggest threat to Mark Warburton's team.

They got off to a good start in their meeting with Dumbarton at Easter Road as Dominique Malonga scored into the top corner from the edge of the box.

But the visitors offered an immediate reply as Grant Gallagher made it 1-1 just a minute later to surprise home supporters.

Their shock didn't last for long as Liam Fontaine put Hibs in front again when he headed in John McGinn's free kick.

This time Alan Stubbs' team wouldn't be pegged back and Jason Cummings gave them a two-goal cushion to take into half-time.

Steven Craig did pull one back for Stevie Aitken's team in the closing stages but after their bright start to the season, they have now won just once in nine outings.

In much more consistent form are Raith, who made it three wins in a row with a narrow 1-0 success at Alloa.

They had to wait until 11 minutes from the end to get their goal, Grant Anderson's second of the season being enough to edge the contest.

Rovers now have 10 wins to their credit in all competitions this term and they have kept clean sheets in seven of those.

St Mirren have had a difficult start to life back in the second tier following their relegation from the Premiership.

They are starting to show signs of recovery at last, however, and recorded back-to-back wins for the first time this season as they defeated Livingston 1-0.

Stevie Mallan scored after 12 minutes at the Tony Macaroni Arena as they followed up last week's 4-0 Challenge Cup win against Dunfermline with only their second Championship victory.

In the final game of the day, Falkirk got their first win in five games with a 1-0 victory against Morton.

Lee Miller scored a minute into injury time to arrest a dip in form which included a 7-0 thrashing at Ross County in the League Cup.

Falkirk will host Hibernian in their outstanding league game on Tuesday night and a win for either side would lift them up beyond Raith into the runners-up position.
