Motherwell boss Mark McGhee has been named Scottish Premiership manager of the month for March

Motherwell boss Mark McGhee has been named Scottish Premiership manager of the month for March.

McGhee, who took over at Fir Park from Ian Baraclough last October, has guided his side into fourth place in the table following five successive victories.

The run, part of six wins from their last seven matches, is in stark contrast to this time last year when they languished bottom of the table and only preserved their top-flight status with a 6-1 aggregate drubbing of Rangers in the end-of-season play-offs.

Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ, the former Celtic and Aberdeen striker, who also won the award in December, said: "In February we had a lot of games where we lost when we should have drawn and drawn when we should have won.

"But we just kept going, kept doing the same things and now we are getting the breaks. On Saturday we scored a 93rd-minute winner (against Inverness) and those are the breaks we weren't getting a few weeks ago."

Motherwell were lying in ninth place in the table when McGhee took over but he refuses to take all the credit for the club's remarkable rise over the winter months.

"Staying in the top four until the end of the season would be credit to everyone at the club, not just me. Les Hutchison (owner) has backed me, the players have worked so, so hard, my staff behind the scenes, the medical staff, everyone, they have got the boys fitter, they've got the boys stronger and they've got the boys believing.

Motherwell's unbeaten run will be tested by SPFL leaders Celtic at the weekend but McGhee is refusing to rule out a repeat of the 2-1 victory over Ronny Deila's side at Celtic Park earlier in the season.

"You are always up against it when you play them," he said. "But Celtic games are just games you've got to enjoy and we will go into the game trying to win it.

"We beat Aberdeen a couple of weeks ago and we will be doing everything we possibly can to keep this run going."

Raith Rovers boss Ray McKinnon was named Ladbrokes Championship manager of the month for March.

The Kirkcaldy club played seven games last month, winning five of them and suffering just one defeat, to all but seal a play-off place.
