A Stephen Dobbie brace helped Queen of the South beat Alloa Athletic 2-0 to reach the Challenge Cup semi-finals.

Neil Parry kept Queen of the South at bay on numerous occasions, but Dobbie eventually opened the scoring with a curled effort.

Dobbie continued to pose problems for Alloa after the break, and the 33-year-old netted his fifth goal in three Challenge Cup games when he headed in from close range.

It was Dobbie's 12th goal for the Championship side, and it put League One outfit Alloa's hopes of reaching the semi-final to bed.

Victory also ended Queen of the South's run of eight games without a win - a run which saw Gavin Skelton stand down as manager earlier in the week.

Elsewhere, Mark Durnan's first-half strike earned Dundee United a place in the last four after they beat Dunfermline Athletic 1-0.

It was the second time in a week United had beat Dunfermline, and once again a Pars player saw red - this time it was Lewis Martin who saw red for a professional foul on Blair Spittal.

Ultimately it was Durnan's deflected effort - his third goal in four games - which guided United to victory.

In Sunday's games, Scott Quigley scored the pick of the goals as Welsh champions The New Saints swept aside Livingston 3-0 to reach the semi finals where they will be joined by Championship strugglers St Mirren, 2-1 winners over Ayr United.

In Scottish League One, Albion beat Stranraer 3-2 in an entertaining encounter, Airdrieonians downed Brechin 1-0, and Queen's Park played out a goalless draw with Peterhead.

In League Two, Forfar's 2-0 win over Berwick helped them cement their place at the top, as second-placed Elgin lost 3-2 at home to Stirling.

Other results saw Cowdenbeath beat Montrose 2-0, Edinburgh City win 1-0 at home to Annan Athletic, and Arbroath thrash Clyde 4-0.
