New Rangers manager Steven Gerrard says Celtic have reigned supreme in Scotland "for far too long".

Brendan Rodgers' side won their seventh consecutive Scottish Premiership title this season and can complete an unprecedented successive domestic treble if they beat Motherwell at Hampden Park next Saturday in the Scottish Cup final.

Rangers have won a record 54 Scottish league titles but had to work their way back to the top flight from the bottom tier of Scottish football after their financial problems in 2012.

Former England captain Gerrard, who formally takes charge of Rangers on June 1, has been tasked with restoring the club to the top of Scottish football and he is optimistic he can do so.

"Celtic have had it their own way for far too long," said Gerrard, who will bring former Liverpool team-mate Gary McAllister to Ibrox with him as his assistant.

"This is a massive opportunity for myself and Gary McAllister to go to a huge football club and try to improve things in Glasgow.

"We go up to Glasgow and we will give it our best."

Gerrard had been coaching Liverpool's U18s after retiring two years ago following a spell with LA Galaxy.

That has given him the perfect opportunity to observe how Jurgen Klopp works and he is a big fan of the attacking brand of football the German has implemented at Liverpool.

"When you look at the style of football that Jurgen Klopp plays, I think every fan in the world loves watching that," Gerrard said. "He's been absolutely massive for the club."
