James Tavernier will be staying with Rangers until at least the summer of 2019

Rangers have confirmed that defender James Tavernier has agreed a one-year extension to his contract and will be staying with the club until at least the summer of 2019.

Sky sources reported on Tuesday that Tavernier had agreed the extension, having enjoyed a fine debut season at Ibrox following his arrival from Wigan last summer.

And Rangers released a statement on Thursday which read: "Rangers are delighted to confirm that James Tavernier has today signed a one-year extension to his contract.

"The English full-back joined the club last summer from Wigan and he enjoyed an excellent first season at the Light Blues.

"The 24 year old played in 50 games for the Gers throughout his debut season and scored 15 goals, breaking the club record previously held by John Greig for the most goals scored by a defender in a single season."
