Mark Warburton has been charged by the Scottish Football Association over his weekend confrontation with referee John Beaton.

Warburton clashed with Beaton at the end of Rangers' 2-1 defeat at Aberdeen after objecting to the award of a free-kick that led to the winning goal.

According to the SFA's notice of complaint the Gers boss "entered the field of play and repeatedly used offensive, abusing and insulting language towards match officials."

He faces a one-match suspension if the charge is upheld and has until October 3 to respond. A principal hearing date has been set for October 13.

The contentious incident came in added time at Pittodrie when Beaton penalised James Tavernier for a challenge on Aberdeen's Jonny Hayes.

James Maddison beat Wes Foderingham from the free-kick, and Warburton told Sky Sports after the game: "We're now bitterly disappointed at a decision of that nature.

"We are convinced - and the fourth official even said - it wasn't a foul. It's an expensive decision.

"I'm frustrated. We are always very respectful of the officials but that's a big decision and the fourth official saw it.

"The ball moved. You've got to be 100 per cent sure to give that decision and we've paid the price."
