Former Liverpool and England captain Steven Gerrard has confirmed talks over becoming the new Rangers manager and described them "positive".
Sky Sports News reported last week that Gerrard, currently the Liverpool academy coach, had held initial discussions with the Scottish Premiership club.
Caretaker boss Graeme Murty was dismissed from the role on Monday and 37-year-old Gerrard later confirmed that talks over him succeeding Murty will continue on Thursday.
"I've held initial talks with Rangers and I plan to pick them up in a couple of days time," he told BT Sport.
"There is [interest]. I've held positive talks with them and I'm busy for a couple of days, so I'll pick them up on Thursday and see if we can progress it."
Sky Sports News understands that, while some issues are still to be resolved, both parties remain keen to reach an agreement.
It is believed Murty told the players of the decision on Tuesday morning, after admitting that discussions with Gerrard had made things difficult for him personally.
A statement from Rangers confirming his departure did, however, open the door for a return to his previous job in the club's academy.
Rangers have been without a permanent manager since sacking Pedro Caixinha in October. Murty had also been caretaker boss before the Portuguese's hiring after Mark Warburton was sacked.
