Gers back in for Urzaiz

RANGERS could be ready to resurrect their interest in Athletic Bilbao`s Ismael Urzaiz after the forward reportedly lowered his wage demands.

The striker has been on Gers boss Alex McLeish`s list of targets for some time, but Big Eck hinted at the start of February that the deal had stalled over his £50,000 a week wage demands.

Athletic are desperate to keep hold of Urzaiz, and have offered him a number of new deals, but he has rejected all proposals to date.

It is thought that the player is looking for a club who can guarantee him European football and a shot at glory, and reports are claiming he is prepared to lower his demands by half in a bid to secure a move.

Urzaiz hinted it may be time to leave Athletic, commenting: "I don't feel welcome at Bilbao any more and feel it is time for a change.

"This will be my last big deal so ideally I would like to play European football for a team that has a chance of winning things."

Although Urzaiz`s agent claimed the player has not ruled out staying with Athletic, a long-term deal with The Gers could tempt him to The SPL.

Rangers could face competition from Atletico Madrid, if as seems likely they win promotion to the Spanish top flight, but they will not be able to offer him European football next term, which could tip the balance in favour of the Glasgow outfit.
