Dave King has vowed to spend 'whatever it takes' to ensure Rangers win the Scottish Championship next season after they failed to gain promotion this year.

The Ibrox chairman and his fellow-board members will provide 'substantial investment' this summer for their incoming manager to obtain a new-look squad.

King has not disclosed exactly how much he feels is required in the next 12 months to succeed but Rangers hope to sell out season tickets and if they do, that will bring in between £12m and £13m.

A price increase of five per cent on that front is to be diverted entirely into team investment, with King calling for supporters to be ‘co-investors’ with him and his fellow-directors.

Rangers hope to announce a new manager within the next week, despite an admission from King the fact they remain in the second tier has put some candidates off the job.

I can’t speak for others but I’m not viewing it in terms of getting a return on my investment. I’m looking at it as putting something into the club.
Dave King, Rangers chairman

He said: “There is going to be a sizeable number of players coming in and coming in at a level where we should be competitive in the Premiership.

'Investment'

“I would expect, depending on the players who are available and the players we bring in, there will be a fairly substantial investment required in the next couple of months.

“I can’t speak for others but I’m not viewing it in terms of getting a return on my investment. I’m looking at it as putting something into the club. If I was looking at this as an investment, I wouldn’t be doing it. It’s not why I’m here. It will be personal for me but as you are aware, there are other investors and there’s more than just me.

“A lot will depend on the season ticket uptake and a lot will depend on the situation with the Sports Direct loan. A lot will depend on where we are in the league in December. If we are leading the league comfortably - which hopefully will be the situation - there might be a greater tendency to wait for the summer transfer window.

“If it was quite tight, we might spend more money in December. If you want to look at the funding plan, the plan is to spend whatever it takes to win the Championship next year.

So the investment must be whatever it takes to comfortably win the league and substantially take us forward into the following season.
Dave King, Rangers chairman

"I think it is very important that we win the league this year, so it's probably the right thing to over-invest this season and make sure we do comfortably come out of the league and have a strong squad going into next season."
