The 20-year-old has only played six times for the Dons first team, although three of those have come in recent weeks.

Centre-back McKenna has formed a promising partnership with Iceland international Kari Arnason and he has now been rewarded by the club for his form.

"It's been quite a few weeks for me and shows how quickly things can change in football," McKenna told the club's official website.

"Kari has been a great help to me with all the experience he has and it's made the transition to first team football a lot easier.

"I tend to take each game as it comes and not set targets but obviously I want to keep my place first and foremost."

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes says McKenna can improve his game but has seen enough potential to see a future for him at the club.

"Scott was always one who we wanted to work with and he's done exceptionally well over the last few games," said McInnes.

"He agreed his new contract very quickly as he has a real affection for the club and while he's not yet the finished article, he's done enough to suggest that he has a great career ahead of him."

McKenna will be looking to add to his appearances tally when Aberdeen face Celtic in a top-of-the-table clash at Pittodrie on Wednesday.
