Hearts have signed forward Cole Stockton on a pre-contract agreement.

The 23-year-old will join the Scottish club on a two-year deal on July 1 when his current contract with Tranmere Rovers expires.

Stockton, who scored 18 goals in all competitions last season including a run of eight goals in the final 11 games, came through the youth ranks at Tranmere and made his professional debut in January 2012.

"Yeah definitely, I'm looking to take confidence from the end of my season into the next. Every striker's got to," he told Hearts' official TV channel.

Hearts director of football Craig Levein insists Ian Cathro remains the right man to take the club forward despite a "frustrating and disappointing" season.

"Every striker lives for goals, don't they? If you get a goal early doors then there's your confidence rolling, but I'd like to take the confidence from last season.

"I'm a big, strong striker but not like a target man. I can do both. I'm very good at holding the ball up, I can bring players into play around the box, and I'm a goalscorer.

"Goals win games, don't they? But I can create chances for others."
