Alassane Plea's goal earned Nice a 1-0 win over AS Nancy on Sunday that moves them top of Ligue 1.

Plea's solitary second-half strike, from inside the penalty area, clinched Nice their fifth win from seven league matches this season and Lucien Favre's side now hold a one-point advantage over Monaco.

Former Borussia Monchengladbach boss Favre replaced Claude Puel in the summer and has made an instant impression at the club.

Defeat leaves Nancy without a home league win this season and they remain second from bottom in the table.

Nancy made all the early running and carved out numerous first-half chances, but the visitors improved after the break and Plea struck his fourth goal of the season in the 60th minute when drilling home a low shot following Valentin Eysseric's pass.

Bafetimbi Gomis converted a second-half penalty as Marseille made it four games unbeaten at home this season with a 2-1 win against Nantes.

The 31-year-old striker notched his fifth goal of the season from the spot and set up Clinton N'Jie's first-half equaliser after Emiliano Sala had given Nantes an early lead.
