Crowd trouble at Bastia's home match against Lyon delayed the start of the match by nearly an hour, then caused the game to be abandoned entirely

The Ligue 1 match between Bastia and Lyon has been abandoned at half-time due to crowd trouble in Corsica.

Bastia fans ran on to the pitch and attempted to attack a number of Lyon players before the game began at the Stade Armand Cesari.

Although stewards were able to intervene, substitute goalkeeper Mathieu Gorgelin was caught in a group before the invaders were held back and players were able to run down the tunnel.

At that stage, Lyon's official Twitter account claimed: "Bastia supporters have entered the field to square up to Lyon players who were finishing their warm-up."

After tensions simmered, the fixture eventually started nearly 55 minutes later than scheduled and was goalless at half-time before the game was abandoned when trouble flared again.

Lyon tweeted again, saying: "Again scuffs after the whistle. [Lyon goalkeeper] Anthony Lopes has been taken to task by fans on the pitch..."

A statement from the French Football League (LFP) read: "Following the new incident at the end of the first period, the LFP decided to stop SC Bastia / Olympique Lyonnais.

"The LFP condemns in the strongest possible terms the incidents which occurred before the match and at half-time of the match SC Bastia / Olympique Lyonnais."

A Bastia statement read: "The Sporting Club de Bastia strongly condemns the incidents that marked the meeting this Sunday against Olympique Lyonnais.

"The club regrets that match counting for the 33th day was not able to go to completion but respects the decision of the LFP and its officials.

"The Sporting Club de Bastia is already gathering all the elements necessary to take the necessary and strong measures that are necessary following these incidents.

"And without waiting for the meeting of the disciplinary committee of the LFP before which the club will appear on Thursday in order to provide all the explanations that will be asked."

It is the second time in less than a week there has been trouble at a match involving Lyon, who are currently fourth in the French top flight.

There were also crowd disturbances before their Europa League clash with Turkish side Besiktas on Thursday, which Lyon came from a goal down in to win 2-1.

The Ligue 1 side were later charged with "insufficient organisation" of their supporters at Parc OL.

A barrage of missiles from upper tiers within the stadium forced fans in lower areas on to the pitch and cast doubt on the game before it was eventually played.
