Lille have provisionally suspended head coach Marcelo Bielsa after reports in France said he went on an unauthorised trip to South America.

According to reports in France, Bielsa, 62, is believed to have visited Chile to see former national team assistant Luis Bonini, who is suffering with stomach cancer.

Lille are second bottom of Ligue 1 having won just three games in 13 league matches.

A club statement said: "Lille has decided today to momentarily suspend Marcelo Bielsa from his coaching duties as part of a procedure initiated by the club."

It is not the first time Bielsa has been involved in controversy during his managerial career.
