Italian World Cup winner Alessandro Del Piero is set to be appointed as the sporting director of Real Mallorca, according to reports in Spain.

American businessman Robert Sarver and his consortium recently bought a majority shareholding in the second-tier Spanish side and he is keen to raise the profile of the club by handing basketball star Steve Nash an ambassadorial role.

Nash is friends with the former Juventus striker and, according to Marca, he has used that friendship to convince Del Piero to take up the role.

The 41-year-old Italian retired in 2015 after spells with Sydney FC in Australia and Delhi Dynamos in India.
