Carlos Carmona scored a consolation goal for Sporting Gijon in their 3-1 defeat to Villarreal

Sporting Gijon scored a bizarre consolation goal in their 3-1 home defeat to Villarreal in La Liga on Saturday afternoon.

Jonathan Dos Santos and Nicola Sansone struck twice in the first half to put Villarreal in control, and former Chelsea striker Alexandre Pato added a third after the break.

It had little impact on the result then when Carlos Carmona pulled one back for the hosts, heading past Sergio Asenjo from a tight angle.

The ball ricocheted back off Carmona following a clearance by a Villarreal defender, looping up and over Asenjo and into the net.

Fresh from an impressive 3-0 win over Atletico Madrid last weekend, Villarreal still held on for a comfortable victory, consolidating their hold on fourth place in the La Liga table.

Meanwhile, Sporting remain in the relegation zone in 18th place.
