Barcelona's Sergio Busquets is the best holding midfielder in the world, says Terry Gibson

Since breaking into the first team in 2008, Busquets has become a mainstay in the Barcelona midfield.

His responsibility has increased following the departure of Xavi in the summer and his partnership with Andres Iniesta has drawn plenty of plaudits as Barcelona have put together a 22-game unbeaten run in all competitions.

Yet the Spanish international rarely grabs many column inches or headlines and he wasn't included in the Fifa/FIFPro World XI that was announced at the prestigious Ballon d'Or ceremony.

However, Barcelona boss Luis Enrique declared in November that Busquets is "the best midfielder in the world" and Gibson finds it hard to argue against that theory.

Speaking on the La Liga Weekly Podcast, the Sky Sports Spanish football expert said: "He's the best holding midfielder in the world and he's up there in terms of his all-around ability. His passing, his first-touch and his intelligence, fitness, strength - I think he's a super player.

"I've been banging on about it for years - I've always felt he was underrated. That doesn't seem to bother him. I think he and Iniesta this season are in brilliant form.

"It's eight years since he came into the team and he has developed. He has been a permanent fixture, playing with some wonderful team-mates in midfield and he has developed exactly how you'd expect for a player that has played that amount of games for his club and country. He is now at the peak of his career."
