Cristiano Ronaldo has suffered a thigh muscle injury, but Real Madrid have given no indication if he will be fit for their Champions League tie away to Manchester City.

The 31-year-old came off the pitch moments before the final whistle during Madrid's 3-0 La Liga victory at home to Villarreal on Wednesday night after falling awkwardly.

Madrid, who are one point behind both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in La Liga with four games to play, face a trip to Rayo Vallecano on Saturday before Tuesday's Champions League semi-final first-leg clash at the Etihad Stadium.

Real coach Zinedine Zidane confirmed Ronaldo will miss his side's visit to Rayo to ensure he will be fit for the clash at City.

"He won't play against Rayo. He'll stay at home and we'll see for the next game," said Zidane.

"He wanted to play tomorrow, but he knows that it isn't possible. We've had to put the brakes on him and he knows his mind has to be on City."

Previously, Ronaldo had played every minute of every league game this season for Los Blancos, but there were fears he could miss some of the title run-in.

The three-time Ballon d'Or winner posted on Instagram on Thursday to reassure fans, saying: "All good. Thanks for your support."

However, a statement from Madrid read: "Following tests carried out today on Cristiano Ronaldo in the Sanitas La Moraleja University Hospital, he has been diagnosed with a muscle strain in his right thigh.

"His recovery will continue to be assessed."

The former Manchester United player has scored 47 goals in 44 games for his club this season.
