Gary Neville sacked by Valencia: A look at his reign in quotes

Valencia's head coach Gary Neville looks on as his side move into the last 16 of the Europa League

Former Manchester United and England defender Gary Neville has been sacked by Valencia after less than four months in charge.

Neville took the job on a contract until the end of the season in December, but results have been poor and Valencia announced the 41-year-old's departure after a run of three consecutive La Liga defeats which has left them just six points above the relegation zone in 14th place.

December 2, 2015 - Appointed head coach of Valencia on a short-term contract until the end of the season.

What he said: "I am absolutely thrilled to be given this opportunity. Valencia are a huge football club of immense standing and I know from my time as a player the passion and dedication of the Valencia fans. I am really looking forward to working with the club's talented group of players and am excited about the challenge ahead."

December 3, 2015 - Unveiled to the world's media at a packed press conference at the Mestalla stadium.

What he said: "From my point of view, sitting on television in these last few years talking about coaches, the time has now come for me to stand up. If I had turned down this job I think I could have said goodbye to credibility in football, because this is an unbelievable club with a huge history."

January 10, 2016 - Unable to build on Real Madrid draw as Valencia fall to a 2-0 defeat away to Real Sociedad in their next league game.

What he said: "Everyone in the dressing room is disappointed, myself more than anyone, but tomorrow everything starts again. We lost against Villarreal (last month) but I was happy with our second-half performance. Today I can't say that. We played below expectations and we have to start winning regularly."

January 14, 2016 - A 3-0 win over Granada rounds off a 7-0 aggregate victory to put Valencia into the Copa del Rey quarter-finals.

January 28, 2016 - Valencia progress to the Copa del Rey semi-finals with a 2-1 aggregate win over Las Palmas.

February 3, 2016 - Pressure intensifies on Neville as Valencia fall to a humiliating 7-0 defeat against Barcelona in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final. Fans call for Neville's sacking and a club director describes it as "one of the worst results in our history".

What he said: "I won't sleep well tonight. I didn't like what I saw. The fans didn't deserve that. We have to recover incredibly quickly. It was one of the most painful experiences I've had in football. I've had some as a player and now I've had some as a manager. We have made so many silly errors that you can't make at any level, let alone against this team."

February 13, 2016 - After nine La Liga games without a win, Neville's men finally clinch a 2-1 victory over Espanyol thanks to goals from Alvaro Negredo and Denis Cheryshev.

What he said: "It's not a night for any celebration whatsoever, not to get carried away. We'll gain some confidence from the result. There's a good feeling from the dressing room and we'll take things forward."

February 14, 2016 - Neville announces for Liverpool coach Pako Ayestaran is to join his backroom staff as his assistant.

What he said: "I'm the head coach of Valencia, I will be the head coach of Valencia for the rest of this season. If I leave, Pako will leave. He's come to be part of my coaching staff. I understand it might look like there's something going on. There absolutely isn't. After about 10 or 14 days I recognised I needed to strengthen the coaching set-up. I feel more comfortable already."

February 18, 2016 - Valencia thump Rapid Vienna 6-0 in their first Europa League knockout clash, scoring five goals in a rampant first half.

What he said: "Obviously the result makes it my best night in Valencia," said Neville. But I've never celebrated victories halfway through the season and this will not be the first time."

March 6, 2016 - After a 3-0 defeat to Athletic Bilbao a week previously, Neville suffers another galling home loss as Atletico Madrid triumph 3-1 at the Mestalla.

March 13, 2016 - Neville faces more fan anger as Valencia lose 1-0 to local rivals Levante, with Giuseppe Rossi scoring the winning goal for La Liga's bottom club.

What he said: "That was an indefensible performance. Unacceptable. It was not good enough. I apologise to the fans of Valencia because the very basic premise of football match is that you run as hard, you fight as hard and you tackle as hard as the opposition."

March 17, 2016 - Valencia are knocked out of the Europa League by Atheltic Bilbao on away goals as Neville is sent to the stands.

What he said: "I have not insulted the referee. I don't like to blame the defeat on the referee. I think we could have won by four or five, but we have been eliminated from the Europa League and it is a bad night. It was the team's highest level since I was here. I think the fans can leave Mestalla proud. There may be disappointment, but tonight the intensity has been maximum. It must be repeated and that is all I ask."

March 20, 2016 - Neville's side lose 2-0 at home to Celta Vigo in what turns out to be the 41-year-old's last match as Valencia's head coach.

What he said: "I find it difficult to explain. I just sat there with the players and coaching staff for 15 minutes trying to understand what actually happened on the pitch. It's obviously the most disappointing result of the season here but it doesn't tell the story of the game, which was the best performance of the season. It's a game we shouldn't lose, you all know that."

Valencia's British coach Gary Neville

March 30, 2016 - Three days before Neville is expected to resume his coaching duties against Las Palmas in La Liga, Valencia announce his sacking, with Ayestaran taking over until the end of the season.

What he said: "I want to thank Valencia, the fans, the coaching staff and players. I would have liked to continue the work I started, but I understand that we are in business based on results and in 28 games we have seen 10 wins, seven draws and 11 defeats, which is not the level demanded by me or by this club."
