Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez has extended his contract at the Vicente Calderon until 2021.

Saul, 21, earned his first senior call-up for Spain in their provisional European Championship squad on Tuesday.

"I am very happy to continue to defend this shirt," he told the club's official website.

Saul has made 47 appearances for Atletico so far this season and scored nine goals, including the decisive strike in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final clash against Bayern Munich in April.

The Spaniard had been linked with a January move to Manchester United in the British press, although Guillem Balague told Sky Sports the player had no interest in moving to Old Trafford and was keen to stay at Atleti.

And Atletico sporting director Jose Luis Caminero said the club was delighted to have retained Saul's services in the Spanish capital.

"We are all very happy with the agreement reached with Saul," Caminero said. "He is an excellent footballer, who has been trained in our academy and reinforces our commitment to the players in the club."
