Villarreal defender Ruben Semedo has been charged by a Spanish judge with attempted murder.
Court officials in Lliria say the Portuguese player, who has been temporarily detained without bail, has also been charged with assault, robbery, illegal detention, and illegal possession of firearms and left the court in handcuffs.
Semedo testified before a judge on Thursday after the 23-year-old was detained on Tuesday, accused of tying up, assaulting and threatening another man last week.
Authorities say he and two other men allegedly held the victim captive while they robbed his apartment. Semedo's agents have told Spanish media the player denies any wrongdoing.
Villarreal said on Tuesday they were investigating Semedo, who was signed from Sporting Lisbon last summer, and would take appropriate disciplinary action.
Semedo has made five appearances in all competitions since his arrival at the La Liga side, who are in Europa League action against Lyon on Thursday.
