Mauro Icardi scored against his former club as Inter Milan moved up to fourth in Serie A with a 3-1 victory over Sampdoria at the San Siro.

Danilo D'Ambrosio ghosted in at the back post to slot home his first goal since October 2014 which opened the scoring for the hosts midway through the first half.

Miranda then claimed his first goal for Inter on 57 minutes by nodding home from close range after Felipe Melo rose highest to meet a left-wing delivery.

Former Sampdoria forward Icardi added a third 17 minutes from time with a cool left-footed finish before Fabio Quagliarella scored his sixth goal of the season in the closing stages.

Earlier, Hellas Verona's fiery 3-1 derby victory over Chievo kept alive their faint hopes of avoiding relegation.

Luca Toni saw his 29th-minute penalty saved but tucked away the spilled ball, with Giampaolo Pazzini rifling home a powerful volley just before the hour.

Hellas defender Vangelis Moras saw red for conceding a 71st-minute spot-kick, which Sergio Pellissier converted, and Chievo defender Nicolas Spolli soon followed the Greek down the tunnel for a second yellow card.

Five minutes into stoppage time, Artur Ionita confirmed the outcome with a screamer from 25 yards to leave Verona seven points behind 17th-placed Genoa.
