Chelsea loanee Papy Djilobodji is being investigated by state prosecutors in Germany for making a throat-slitting gesture during a Bundesliga match earlier this year.
The Senegal defender, who is on loan with Werder Bremen, ran his finger across his throat in the direction of Mainz player Pablo De Blasis during the 1-1 draw in March.
Djilobodji was banned and fined by the German FA over the incident and the matter appeared to be over after he apologised to De Blasis.
However, just three days before Bremen's showdown with fellow relegation side Eintracht Frankfurt it has emerged that police are looking into the incident.
"We're investigating a Werder player for threatening behaviour. A citizen brought the charges," senior public prosecutor Frank Passade told German newspaper Bild.
"The suspect will be given the opportunity to comment on the allegations."
Djilobodji has played in 13 league games for Bremen, scoring one goal and collecting six yellow cards since arriving in January.
The 27-year-old joined Chelsea from Nantes on a four-year deal in August but played just one minute for the Blues in the Capital One Cup before leaving for Germany.
Bremen are 16th in the league and play Frankfurt in Saturday's final league game in a bid to avoid a relegation play-off.
