Lucien Favre has resigned as head coach of Borussia Monchengladbach following the club's worst ever start to a Bundesliga campaign.
Monchengladbach lost 1-0 to Cologne on Saturday to make it five defeats in a row, following a midweek 3-0 defeat to Sevilla in the Champions League.
They now languish in bottom place in the Bundesliga and Favre believed it was time for him to step aside.
Favre saved Monchengladbach from potential relegation in 2011 and led them to a third place finish last season, which secured a maiden Champions League group stage spot.
However, he will not be in charge for Monchengladbach's next match in the competition at home to Manchester City on the 30th September.
He said: "After long thought and detailed analysis I have come to the conclusion that it is in this situation the best possible decision to step down as head coach of Borussia Moenchengladbach.
"I was privileged to lead the club from near-relegation to the Champions League. There were a lot of unbelievable, exhilarating moments."
