Wolfsburg have extended the contract of coveted wing-back Ricardo Rodriguez until 2019.

The Switzerland international, who joined the Wolves in 2012, has made 87 Bundesliga appearances for the club since arriving from FC Zurich.

"Ricardo Rodriguez has developed really well and his contract extension is an important step since he is a very important member of our team," said the club's director of sport Klaus Allofs.

"We're delighted that we have been able to convince him to carry on along the road we are going and we hope that it will continue as successfully as it has been so far."

Rodriguez, capped 18 times by his country, caught the eye at the World Cup last summer and had been linked with several top European clubs.

His new contract with the Wolves is a sign of how committed he is to the Bundesliga club.

"I've been here for three years and I've settled in well and made many friends here," Rodriguez said.

"The team is great and it didn't take me long to agree (to stay)."

Wolfsburg are on course for a place in the Champions League next season and Rodriguez's commitment is an important signal to the rest of the team, and one welcomed by coach Dieter Hecking.

"He's one of the best players around in his left-back position," Hecking said.

"It is of great importance to Wolfsburg that we have a player of his quality among our ranks in the long term."
