Everton's John Stones and Seamus Coleman are European Qualifiers doubts

Everton manager Roberto Martinez does not expect John Stones or Seamus Coleman to be fit enough to represent their countries in the forthcoming international period.

Neither player featured in their club's 1-1 Merseyside derby draw with Liverpool on Sunday afternoon, with each failing a pre-match fitness test.

Stones has been sidelined with a medial ligament injury which he sustained last month at West Brom.

Coleman, meanwhile, has been out with a hamstring problem since Everton's 3-1 win over Chelsea at Goodison Park on September 12.

Stones was named in Roy Hodgson's squad for England's games against Estonia and Lithuania on Friday and next Monday.

With the team having already qualified for the Euro 2016 finals in France, losing the defender is not such a wrench for Hodgson.

The bigger problem comes for the Republic of Ireland, who finish their campaign with a difficult double-header against Germany and Poland.

Martin O'Neill's men need points from those fixtures to have a chance of finishing in the top two in Group D and also to stay ahead of fourth-placed Scotland, who could beat them to a play-off spot.

In turn, O'Neill is looking for his strongest squad possible and losing Coleman - who has played in six of Ireland's eight European Qualifiers so far - would be a notable setback.

Martinez said: "Seamus was desperate to play today and desperate to play for Ireland but medically he wasn't ready.

"I don't know how long it is going to take. I doubt it will be two or three days and he will be fine.

"I think it is going to be a bit longer than that. We are going to work with Ireland and hopefully get Seamus on the pitch as quick as we can."
