England goalkeeper Joe Hart hopes Manchester City team-mate Raheem Sterling will be protected by referees at Euro 2016.

Sterling struggled for form at the end of the Premier League season and dropped out of City's starting line-up after his return from injury.

England manager Roy Hodgson played him for 73 minutes in the 2-1 friendly win over Turkey on Sunday and although he struggled to impose himself on the game, Sterling can be a game-changer on his day, insists Hart.

"He got kicked to pieces because they couldn't deal with him, simple as that," said Hart.

"Maybe in a [European] Championship game a few of them would have been walking a lot tighter rope than they were.

"He was good, I was excited to see it. It was tough for Raheem towards the end of the season, he wasn't starting games, but that's gone and it's a fresh chapter.

"A fit and firing Raheem Sterling can change games.
