Football Association to launch 'Player to Coach’ initiative

The Football Association is to launch a ‘Player to Coach’ initiative to introduce England players past and present to coaching.

John Terry, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Ashley Cole and Wayne Rooney are among those to be assisted by the FA in attaining their coaching badges.

They will be assessed on a range of skills – both practical and theoretical – but have not as yet been offered coaching roles at the FA.

The governing body is keen to ensure big names gain coaching qualifications. England manager Gareth Southgate and technical director Dan Ashworth want the players involved and the FA is ready to create a tailored programme to help the former internationals get their UEFA A and Pro licenses.

Sky sources also understand reports that Lampard could be offered a coaching role under Southgate in the new-look England set-up are wide of the mark.

Sammy Lee left his role as England's assistant manager on December 6, prompting speculation about a replacement.
