Fellow full-back Kieran Trippier is in the squad for the first time, however, and Southgate admits he is impressed with how the former Burnley defender ended the season at Tottenham.

"I watched him [Trippier] a lot at Burnley," said Southgate. "He has got a good mentality and I like his play in the final third of the pitch, it is high quality.

"He is one of the best crossers in the league and his selection of passes is good.

"It has obviously been an unusual situation, we have had two of our best full-backs [Trippier and Kyle Walker] at Tottenham and it's been nice from our point of view that Kieran has had matches at the end of the season.

"He is someone we have been following but we will be without Nathaniel Clyne as he has been carrying an injury.
