Tottenham midfielder Eric Dier says there will never be a "friendly" international between England and Germany.

Dier is with the England squad preparing for the Wembley fixture against Germany on Friday followed by the arrival of Brazil next Tuesday and he is excited by the quality of opposition.

He said: "I think the manager has already said that if we are going to play friendlies, he wants to be playing the very best nations in the world and to challenge ourselves and I think that is the right mentality.

"These are two really big friendlies. I don't think there is ever going to be a friendly between England and Germany so we are really looking forward to it."

Dier, who played a major part in England's qualifying campaign for the World Cup in Russia next year, added: "I think the minute we qualified we had to start our focus on the World Cup.

"Everything we do from now onwards is with the World Cup in mind, so we are going to prepare for it in the best way we possibly can and that starts on Friday."

England's early exit from Euro 2016 - where they were beaten 2-1 by Iceland in the last 16 - still rankles with Dier and he accepts the team have to perform much better in tournaments.

"There is obviously a lot of room for improvement," he went on. "I wouldn't just say the last two tournaments, I think it goes back a long way to be honest.

"I think it is a long, long time since you could say England have had a successful international tournament because winning it is the only way I would see as being successful so there is a long way to go.

"This is quite a new group that has come together since the Euros, lots of new faces, quite a young team, so I think the margin for progression is huge."
