England Euro 2016 squad: Rob Lee predicts who'll be on plane to France

Graphic

Rob Lee has named the 23 players, fitness permitting, he thinks will be in England's Euro 2016 squad. Do you agree?

Lee won 21 caps for England from 1994 to 1998, scoring on his debut against the United States and against South Africa. He was a member of Glenn Hoddle's World Cup squad at France '98.

And these are the players he wants to see Roy Hodgson take to France this summer...

Goalkeepers

Rob's picks:

England goalkeeper Joe Hart may have ended the San Marino qualifier with a headache - so says former No 1 Ray Clemence
Image: Joe Hart is a dead cert to be on the plane, according to former England international Lee

Joe Hart: A dead cert. He is our No 1 and I cannot see anyone replacing him, unless he has a dramatic drop in form.

Fraser Forster: Before he got injured, I thought he was outstanding for Southampton and I think he will be the No 2.

Also See:

Jack Butland: As a young lad coming through, he has done fantastically well when he has been called upon and obviously he is now Stoke's No 1. So I think they will be England's three keepers.

Missing out: Ben Foster, Tom Heaton, Rob Green.

Defenders

Rob's picks:

Nathaniel Clyne: He has done very well. He was great for Southampton and has now gone to Liverpool and is doing just as well, so I have no issues with him.

Kyle Walker: I have always liked him at Spurs and I still like him, and I think that if he plays as well as he can do, then he could be first-choice right-back by the time we get there - but that is just my opinion.

Leighton Baines: He has had a few injuries, but once he gets back, he has a great left foot and gets up and down.

Luke Shaw: He is now starting to become the sort of player we thought he was going to be. It has taken him a good year to get used to playing for Manchester United and the way they like to play, and if he keeps up this form, then I think he will start and be the first choice in France.

Phil Jagielka and Gary Cahill have never let us down, and there is Chris Smalling as well - they are also all performing well for their clubs. I think that Smalling and Cahill would start if the tournament was tomorrow, with Jagielka as the back-up.

It is just whether John Stones comes through the way we think he will, as if he does, I think he will play, because he is very good at coming out with the ball, and I think you need that at a tournament. But it is just whether he progresses.

Missing out: Phil Jones, Glen Johnson, Kieran Gibbs, Danny Rose, Calum Chambers, Joe Gomez.

Midfielders

Rob's picks:

Image: When Michael Carrick plays well, so do England, says the one-time England midfielder

Michael Carrick: I think he is the most underrated footballer in the Premier League. I played with him at West Ham and wherever he has gone, he has done really well. When he plays well, Manchester United play well, and I think it is the same with England. We do not have a passer of the ball like him - nobody passes it like him - and I think he is a must.

Jordan Henderson: He has done brilliant for me and when you think how much he cost Liverpool a few years ago when he joined from Sunderland, even I thought: 'wow, that is a lot of money.' But now it looks like a bit of a snip as he is Liverpool captain and he has done so well.

James Milner: He never lets you down... that's all I can say about him, where ever you play him. He is a dead cert to be on the plane.

Ross Barkley: He is our little bit of flair. He can play off the front man, out wide and if he progresses the way we think he is going to, then he could be the new Paul Gascoigne.

I think Carrick is the most under-rated footballer in the Premier League
Rob Lee

Jack Wilshere: A lot of injury problems, but I like him. Again, he gives you something different. They have tried sitting him in midfield, but I would not do that. I think he needs to attack, as he has an incredible range of passing. He should score more goals, but I think he will go.

We then have pace in abundance in Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Theo Walcott and Raheem Sterling, and I think that gives us pace.

I would like to see Walcott and Oxlade-Chamberlain play more for their club. Sterling will play all the time for Manchester City and he is a danger, but I think the other two should play more for their club. And they just give you pace, which you will need at the Euros when England will have to suck teams on and then use their pace.

Missing out: Andros Townsend, Fabian Delph, Jonjo Shelvey, Adam Lallana, Ryan Mason, Ashley Young, Jack Grealish, Jordon Ibe and Dele Alli.

Strikers

Rob's picks:

Image: Harry Kane is an absolute must to make England's squad, in Lee's opinion

Harry Kane: He is a must in my opinion. People questioned whether he could do it in his second season, but I think he definitely will. If you give him chances, the way he finishes, I think he will score goals.

Wayne Rooney: He is our talisman and best player. There is no question about him playing, I just hope they play him in the right position. You either play him up front on his own, or off Harry Kane, but do not play him wide. Let's play our best player in our best position.

Danny Welbeck: Whenever he has played for England, he has done great. He works his socks off, you can play him up front or wide, he is always a threat. He does not score enough goals really to be the main striker, but I think he will do well in tournaments.

Daniel Sturridge: Once he gets himself fit and playing again for Liverpool, again he gives us something different, he can get you a goal out of nothing, has got pace and if fit, I think he will be in the squad.

Missing out: Charlie Austin, Rickie Lambert, Saido Berahino, Jamie Vardy, Danny Ings and Jay Rodriguez.

Rob Lee's 23-man England squad for Euro 2016: Hart, Forster, Butland, Clyne, Walker, Baines, Shaw, Jagielka, Cahill, Smalling, Stones, Carrick, Henderson, Milner, Barkley, Wilshere, Oxlade-Chamberlian, Walcott, Sterling, Kane, Rooney, Welbeck, Sturridge.
