Wales kicked their Euro 2016 campaign off with an encouraging 2-1 victory over Slovakia in Bordeaux.

In what was their first appearance at a major tournament in 58 years, Gareth Bale's first-half free-kick fired Chris Coleman's men into the lead.

It looked as though the Welsh would have to settle for a point after Ondrej Duda equalised for the Slovaks, but substitute Hal Robson-Kanu hit the winner nine minutes from time.

But how did the likes of Bale, Aaron Ramsey, Joe Allen and co fare in the Nouveau Stade Bordeaux? Who looked good and who let themselves down?

We asked former Wales and West Ham midfielder Jack Collison to rate each player out of 10...

Danny Ward - 7.5

Wales' goalkeeper Danny Ward eyes the ball during the Euro 2016 group B football match between Wales and Slovakia at the Stade de Bordeaux in Bordeaux

It was a pretty solid display and he didn't have too many saves to make. He looked very assured and gave the defence a bit of confidence.

Also See:

It is probably the trickiest position to come in to at the last minute and he's made two prior appearances for Wales so it was a big moment and I thought he dealt with the occasion very well.

Chris Gunter - 7.5

BORDEAUX, FRANCE - JUNE 11: Chris Gunter of Wales is tackled by Vladimir Weiss of Slovakia during the UEFA EURO 2016 Group B match between Wales and Slova

For me, he was probably the pick of the Wales back line. He was very attacking, especially in the first half and had lots of joy getting down the right hand side, creating attacking options for them.

Ashley Williams - 7

Slovakia's forward Michal Duris vies for the ball against Wales' defender Ashley Williams during the Euro 2016 group B football match between Wales and Slo

Mr Captain Fantastic, you could see him leading and commanding the boys. He wasn't so heavily involved but made some vital tackles and blocks and led the troops well.

James Chester - 7

BORDEAUX, FRANCE - JUNE 11: Vladimir Weiss of Slovakia and James Chester of Wales compete for the ball during the UEFA EURO 2016 Group B match between Wale

The entire back three were fairly similar and Chester does exactly what he says on the tin. He doesn't ever seem to have a bad game, especially for Wales and once again looked solid with a couple of vital interceptions so he did well.

Ben Davies - 7

Ben Davies clears Marek Hamsik's shot

There are big key moments in games and if Wales had gone behind after three minutes, it could have been a disaster. It was a fantastic block and it is worth just as much as a goal so it was a very solid display.

Even at the end, he was making key tackles and passes and was a real positive for the team.

Neil Taylor - 7

BORDEAUX, FRANCE - JUNE 11: Peter Pekarik of Slovakia controls the ball under pressure of Neil Taylor of Wales during the UEFA EURO 2016 Group B match bet

It was a fairly steady game for Taylor, and he didn't get in as many good attacking positions as Gunter but stuck to his task well especially in the second half with Mak where he got more involved in the game and was tested more defensively, but he did a good job.

David Edwards - 6.5

Wales' midfielder David Edwards (L) vies for the ball with Slovakia's midfielder Robert Mak during the Euro 2016 group B football match between Wales and S

A bit quiet for Edwards but he worked hard and stuck in there. He tired a bit towards the end but he's only just come back from injury, but still made some good interceptions and was very steady alongside Joe Allen.

Joe Allen - 7.5

BORDEAUX, FRANCE - JUNE 11: Marek Hamsik of Slovakia and Joe Allen of Wales compete for the ball during the UEFA EURO 2016 Group B match between Wales and

He was fantastic for me in the first half, very heavily involved and was always on the front foot to try and get Wales on the attack.

He maybe tired slightly in the second half and found it a bit tough at times but stuck to his task well and for me, was one of Wales' better players.

Aaron Ramsey - 7

Wales' midfielder Aaron Ramsey (L) vies for the ball against Slovakia's midfielder Miroslav Stoch during the Euro 2016 group B football match between Wales

He was brilliant, full of energy and great on the ball to really try and drive the team forward and make things happen at the other end.

He missed a great chance with the header, but I'm sure he will be a big player over the next few games.

Jonny Williams - 7

BORDEAUX, FRANCE - JUNE 11: Jonathan Williams of Wales and Peter Pekarik of Slovakia compete for the ball during the UEFA EURO 2016 Group B match between

He had a brilliant first half and it was an inspired choice from Chris Coleman to put him in the starting line up. He was busy, making tackles and a constant thorn in Slovakia's side.

You wouldn't want to play against him. He's like a buzzing bee, around your feet the whole time and it would have given him great confidence. He fully justified his pick in the team today.

Gareth Bale - 7.5

BORDEAUX, FRANCE - JUNE 11: Gareth Bale of Wales celebrates scoring his team's first goal during the UEFA EURO 2016 Group B match between Wales and Slovak

Maybe a bit quiet for Bale today but he still showed glimpses of what he's about. It was a wonderful free kick to set the team on their way and towards the end as the game got stretched, he got more and more involved.

I'm sure he's going to have a wonderful tournament if he continues to play like that.

Substitutes

Joe Ledley - 6.5

It was great to see him get back, more so for him because after an injury, it's important that you get back to playing and get those important minutes so hopefully those 20 minutes at the end of the game will stand him in good stead moving forward.

He was also heavily involved in the goal with a fantastic pass for Aaron Ramsey so it was great to see Ledley back out there.

Hal Robson-Kanu - 7

Wasn't he fantastic? It is the perfect sub but he did his job well. He stretched the game, running in behind and creating space for others.

When he got the chance, it might have hit his shin, but every goal counts and that's what the subs are there to do.

Jazz Richards - n/a

I don't think he touched the ball, but great to see Jazz on the pitch.
