Shane Duffy is proud of the part he played in helping the Republic or Ireland reach the Euro 2016 knockout stages and has vowed to learn from the red card he received in the 2-1 loss to France on Sunday.

The Blackburn defender was handed his competitive debut and just his fourth senior cap in the 1-0 victory over Italy, which booked them a last-16 clash with the hosts in Lyon

Ecstasy turned to agony for Duffy when he was sent off for bringing down France's goalscoring hero Antoine Griezmann after the Atletico Madrid forward had scored twice to give the hosts a 2-1 lead.

But the former Everton trainee, who almost lost his life after a freak training injury in 2010 caused him to lose more than 3.5 litres of blood, is desperate to continue his education in international colours.

"I felt like I could play at this level. I felt comfortable out there," Duffy said. "I feel like I have done all right, but the red card hasn't helped me.

"I have tried to make a challenge for the ball. It's difficult because if I don't make it or if I leave it they score. It's football. It's a matter of inches.
