Germany will be without striker Lukas Podolski for their European Qualifiers against the Republic of Ireland and Georgia.

The former Arsenal forward is struggling with an ankle injury suffered playing for Galatasaray.

He travelled to Frankfurt nursing a swollen ankle and was diagnosed upon arrival in Frankfurt with "a painful capsule irritation of the left upper ankle joint."

The German Football Federation said Podolski would be returning to Turkey for further treatment.

Coach Joachim Low still has 22 players in his squad, although Bayer Leverkusen winger Karim Bellarabi is not 100 per cent because of a shoulder problem.

Germany needs one point from the final two Group D games, starting against Ireland in Dublin on Thursday, to ensure qualification for the finals in France next summer.
