Argentine TV hosts held a minute's silence after their 3-0 defeat to Croatia

Argentina's World Cup hopes are hanging by a thread following the 3-0 drubbing by Croatia and one Argentine television show was in no doubt of how grave the situation is.

TyC Sports held a minute's silence in the aftermath of the Group D defeat, which leaves Argentina relying on other results to qualify for the knockout stages.

Ossie Ardiles, a World Cup winner with Argentina in 1978, launched a scathing attack on the team, calling under-fire coach Jorge Sampaoli 'arrogant and ignorant' and blasting his tactics.

The players did not escape Ardiles' anger either, the ex-midfielder saying: "To be playing outside of Argentina does not mean they are elite players. Many of them were not even starters in their own teams."

Argentina's final group game is against Nigeria in Saint Petersburg on Tuesday.
