FA Cup first round: Non-league Chesham United see off Bristol Rovers
Sunday 8 November 2015 18:52, UK
Ryan Blake was the toast of Chesham United on Sunday after they travelled to the Memorial Ground and dispatched League Two Bristol Rovers from the first round of the FA Cup.
Blake netted the only goal of the game 13 minutes from time, when he fired home from outside the box to seal a 1-0 victory for the Buckinghamshire club and a place in Monday evening's second-round draw.
Earlier, a Toby Little free-kick clipped the Rovers crossbar, while the non-league side - 17th in the Southern League Premier Division, three divisions below the Pirates - also missed a 28th-minute penalty when Lee Nicholls saved from Dave Pearce.
However, the hosts were left to rue numerous missed chances, having had 17 corners to just four by Chesham.
National League North Brackley Town came from two down to force a replay against League Two Newport County, who conceded a late goal in a 2-2 draw.
Curtis McDonald headed Brackley's equaliser, from a Tom Winters cross, in the final minute to complete a second-half comeback at St. James Park in Northamptonshire.
Visitors Newport opened the scoring via a Lennell John-Lewis penalty on 15, before doubling the margin shortly before the break thanks to a fine individual effort from Scott Bennett.
Luke Graham headed Brackley back into the contest just before the hour mark and McDonald completed the recovery from 12 yards.
Maidenhead United left it late to snatch an equaliser, and a home replay, against Port Vale who were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw.
Substitute James Mulley's low strike in the 94th minute disappointed most of those watching at Vale Park, but gave the National League South team another bite of the cherry.
Byron Moore opened the scoring after half-an-hour, latching onto an assist from Louis Doods, and the hosts will feel aggrieved at not capitalising on their domination.
As expected, Maidenhead manager Alan Devonshire was happy with the draw, saying: "Sometimes substitutions come off and sometimes they don't. All I know is we got what we deserved, and I can't praise the lads highly enough.
"I'm not singling anyone out because every one of them was fantastic. Our 'keeper has made a couple of saves but we've had chances ourselves.
"The replay is another game and Vale have seen us now and will know what we are all about."
His counterpart at Vale, Rob Page, was angry with his team, adding: "It's unprofessionalism at the end of the day. Some of our players were a bit arrogant and the second-half performance was totally unacceptable all round.
"The only positive we can take is the fact we are in the hat for the second-round draw."
Matt Rhead netted a hat-trick for Lincoln City but still ended up on the losing side in an eight-goal thriller away to Whitehawk.
The visitors were never ahead but kept the battle going until the very end, which witnessed three goals during the closing few minutes.
Rhead opened his account on the stroke of half-time - which left Whitehawk 2-1 ahead - before grabbing his second on 63 as the hosts from Brighton entered the closing stages 3-2 up.
After Whitehawk had gone 4-2 in front on 86, Rhead completed his hat-trick with a header, only for Sam Deering to finally secure the 5-3 triumph with a penalty in the fifth minute of injury time.
Alan Power, who conceded the penalty, saw red as City played out the final few moments of the match with just 10 men.
Another team to finish a man down were League Two Oxford United who drew 1-1 away to National League Braintree.
Ryan Taylor met Callum O'Dowda's cross on 15 to head the visitors in front, only for Kenny Davis to equalise for the National League side in the 63rd minute.
Johnny Mullins was shown a second yellow card 19 minutes from time, while United's Liam Sercombe hit a post on 80 - shortly after coming on as a substitute.
Elsewhere, Exeter City eased past Didcot Town who were playing at this stage of the competition for the first time in their history.
Hosts Didcot, an eighth-tier team, lost 3-0 with all the goals coming in the second half.
Former Cup semi-finalists Wycombe Wanderers beat National League Halifax 4-0 with three of the goals arriving in the final 25 minutes.
The best goal, and the decisive second, was a long-range strike from Sido Jombati.
James Collins was the hero for Shrewsbury Town, who edged past National League North side Gainsborough Trinity 1-0.
From outside the box, Collins located the bottom right-hand corner of the net in the 71st minute.
However, Gainsborough had come close to taking the head when a Marc Newsham header struck the bar in first-half injury time.
And despite being reduced to nine men, Yeovil Town were still able to overcome Maidstone United 1-0.
Wes Fogden netted the only goal on 55 after the National League South side had failed to clear a Yeovil free-kick.
The visitors had Jakub Sokolik sent off for a nasty tackle inside the opening 10 minutes, while keeper Artur Krysiak left the pitch less than three minutes after Yeovil had taken the lead.
The Kent team came close to grabbing an equaliser when Jamie Coyle headed against a post on 82.
In the day's only other Cup fixture, National League Aldershot Town drew 0-0 at home to Bradford City who dominated both possession and shots on goal.
