Watch former Liverpool captain Phil Thompson react in the Soccer Special studio as Liverpool equalise against Manchester City

Former Liverpool captain Phil Thompson could not hide his excitement as he watched the Reds progress to the semi-finals of the Champions League on Soccer Special on Tuesday.

It looked like being a nervy evening for Thommo, who won the European Cup three times with Liverpool, after Manchester City scored early at the Etihad to reduce the aggregate score to 3-1.

However, after withstanding a spell of constant pressure from City, the Reds got a crucial away goal after half-time to all-but secure their progress.

At first Thommo thought it was going to be a penalty as Sadio Mane broke into the box, but soon he was fist pumping and shouting as Mohamed Salah coolly chipped into the net.

Roberto Firmino scored later in the game as Liverpool won 5-1 on aggregate to book their place in the last four for the first time since 2008.
