Alan Shearer broke Jackie Milburn’s Newcastle scoring record with a goal in a 2-0 win over Portsmouth in the 2005/06 season.

Newcastle supporters had long revelled in Alan Shearer’s predatory instincts and in this game he confirmed his place as the club’s highest scorer of all-time.

Shearer admitted his mind wasn’t on breaking Jackie Milburn’s record because the Magpies were in trouble – just six points off the relegation zone.

But Shearer’s goal sealed a 2-0 win at St James’ Park and was met with mass relief.

The man of the moment after the win said: "I can now sleep easy that the pressure has gone"

Frank Lampard broke Bobby Tambling’s record as Chelsea’s all-time top scorer by scoring both goals in a 2-1 win over Aston Villa in the 2012/13 season.

Frank Lampard hauled Chelsea over the finishing line when his team needed him most on so many occasions during his Premier League career.

This performance against Aston Villa was a prime example of his match-winning capabilities. Lampard‘s equaliser with just under half-an-hour to go at Villa Park to go set up a tense finale and, as the game wore on, Chelsea became increasingly desperate in their search for a winner.

A second Lampard goal clinched a dramatic 2-1 win with just two minutes to go and, in the process, the Blues hero broke Bobby Tambling’s record as club’s all-time top scorer.

His phenomenal goal ratio had dried up in the weeks building up to this clash but the Arsenal striker soon put a stop to that in this match.

A vest bearing '179' was twice given its airing as Wright celebrated early on goal 178. He eventually completed his hat-trick and earned himself a standing ovation from the Highbury faithful.
