Keita Balde came off the bench to score the only goal of the game as Lazio beat Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 in the first leg of their Champions League play-off at the Stadio Olimpico .
Both teams struck the woodwork in the first half, with Lars Bender's 25-yard effort hitting the post before Miroslav Klose's effort came off the upright at the other end.
Stefan Kiessling had a goal ruled out for offside on 69 minutes before Klose's replacement Keita showed excellent composure to hold off the Leverkusen defenders and slot home 13 minutes from time.
Elsewhere in the first leg of the ties which will determine who progresses to the group stage, Islam Slimani's late winner gave Sporting Lisbon a 2-1 home win over CSKA Moscow.
Teofilo Gutierrez's close-range strike on 12 minutes gave the home side the lead and Sporting breathed a sigh of relief 15 minutes later when goalkeeper Rui Patricio saved a Seydou Doumbia penalty.
But five minutes before the break the Ivory Coast forward beat the offside trap to round Patricio and send CSKA into half-time on level terms.
But with just eight minutes remaining, Slimani beat Igor Akinfeev with a powerful low shot from the edge of the area to secure a narrow victory.
Meanwhile, BATE Borisov beat Partizan Belgrade 1-0 courtesy of a Mikhail Gordeichuk second-half header.
Partizan had earlier seen midfielder Marko Jevtovic sent off for a second bookable offence in first-half stoppage time.
And Tuesday night's early kick-off saw Astana became the first Kazakhstan team to win a Champions League play-off match with a 1-0 home win over APOEL Nicosia.
Baurzhan Dzholchiyev's header on 14 minutes proved enough for the side from the Kazakh capital, who are aiming to make their debut in the group stages of the competition.
