I was at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday to witness Chelsea's first failure to win either of opening two games since 1998. That season they lost at Coventry and then drew at home to Newcastle and Arsenal.

It was their first August defeat since 2006 when they lost 2-1 away to Middlesbrough. They have played 28 games in the month of August in between.

This was Jose Mourinho's first Premier League loss to Manchester City since his very first Chelsea defeat in 2004 when they lost 1-0 to a Nicolas Anelka penalty. This was Manuel Pellegrini's first league win for Man City over Chelsea.

Also See:

Fernandinho scored for Shakhtar at home to Chelsea in 2012 and repeated that on Sunday.

Chelsea's lack of goals is interesting. Cesc Fabregas has one goal in his last 20 Premier League games (the winner at QPR), Nemanja Matic only has one Premier League goal to his name (at Everton in the 6-3 win a year ago), Willian has one goal in his last 33 league games and Radamel Falcao has no goals in his last 14 Premier League appearances.

The curse of the 'P' manager struck again. Last season Chelsea lost to Alan Pardew, Mauricio Pochettino, Phil Parkinson and Tony Pulis – and now they have lost to Manuel Pellegrini. Their next two games are against Pulis and Pardew. And if we include the Community Shield then we can say Mourinho lost to 'Le Professeur' Arsene Wenger as well.

Struggling Chelsea

Chelsea only picked up one point from their first two games? Has a PL champion ever got no points from the first two games? Jim

Jose Mourinho

MARTIN SAYS: No defending Premier League champion has earned zero points from the first two games of the next season.

Chelsea's defeat at Manchester City on Super Sunday leaves them with just one point from the first two games of their title defence – the worst record by any defending Premier League champion.

Before this season, only in 2007/08 have the defending champions failed to win either of their first two games – Manchester United were held to a goalless draw by Reading before earning a point with a 1-1 draw at Portsmouth. United also went on to lose their third fixture, away to rivals Manchester City, and finally won at the fourth time of asking when they beat Tottenham 1-0.

Worst records of defending PL champion in opening two matches: Chelsea 2015/16 (1 point), Man Utd 2007/08 (2 points) Blackburn 1995/96 (3 points), Chelsea 2006/07 (3 points), Man Utd 2009/10 (3 points).

We've seen eight Premier League champions kick off their title defence with two wins from two. Those teams were Man Utd (1993/94, 1997/98, 2003/04, 2011/12), Arsenal (2004/05), Chelsea (2005/06, 2010/11) and Man City (2014/15).

Red mist

We've seen two goalkeepers sent off already this season. Are we on course for a record? Mark G

Adrian was sent off for a dangerous challenge on Jamie Vardy

MARTIN SAYS: Thibaut Courtois' dismissal on the opening day and Adrian's red for West Ham against Leicester on Saturday mean we've already matched the number of goalkeeper red cards from last season.

Lukasz Fabianski was the first goalkeeper sent off last season when he saw red for Swansea against West Ham on December 7 and West Ham's Adrian was sent off at Southampton on February 11.

There has been a goalkeeper sent off at least once in each Premier League season since its inception 23 years ago – however in six of those seasons (1996/97, 2004/05 and 2007/08-2010/11) there was just one red card.

Since 2000 we've never seen more than four goalkeeper red cards in one season, but the overall record is six in both the 1994/95 and 1998/99 seasons.

1994/95: Pavel Srnicek (twice), Mark Bosnich, Andy Dibble, Tim Flowers, Kevin Pressman

1998/99: Shaka Hislop, Russell Hoult, Paul Jones, Michael Oakes, Pavel Srnicek, Andy Petterson

Naughty Newcastle

Could Aleksandar Mitrovic become the first player to be booked in his first three Premier League matches? Kirsten

Aleksandar Mitrovic: In action for Newcastle at York

MARTIN SAYS: Not only has the new Newcastle striker been booked in his first two appearances, he managed both pretty quickly after coming on as a substitute!

He's got a way to go to set a record, though – and funnily enough it's held by a former Newcastle player. James Perch was booked on his Newcastle debut against Everton in 2010, and went on to receive cautions in the next four matches. So that's five bookings in his first five Premier League games!

Edgar Davids already had a reputation for being a tough midfielder before he moved to the Premier League, and the midfielder picked up four yellows in his first four appearances for Tottenham, starting with a caution against Liverpool in 2005.

Four players have managed three yellows in their first three Premier League appearances – Marcos Alonso for Bolton in 2011, Malky Mackay for Watford in 2006, Youssef Safri for Norwich in 2004 and Leicester's Neil Lennon back in 1996. Mitrovic can equal those players if he is cautioned against Manchester United on Saturday.

it's worth pointing out that, like Mitrovic, Liverpool's Joe Gomez, Aston Villa's Idrissa Gueye and Bournemouth's Steve Cook have also been booked in the first two games and could be in line to match some of these records.

Same score streaks

Man Utd have won their two games 1-0. What's the longest streak of a team winning by the same scoreline at the start of a season? Andy Benship

Adnan Januzaj
Image: Manchester United have won both of their Premier League games 1-0

MARTIN SAYS: Both Manchester clubs have, in fact, started this season with the same scoreline twice. United have beaten Tottenham and Aston Villa 1-0, while City's excellent 3-0 win over Chelsea followed their win by the same scoreline at West Brom in their opening fixture.

Furthermore, Liverpool have enjoyed two 1-0 victories and Bournemouth have had two 1-0 defeats to start the campaign.

In 2013/14, when they finished second, Liverpool began their campaign with three 1-0 wins against Stoke, Aston Villa and Manchester United – with all the goals scored by Daniel Sturridge.

There are three other occasions a team has had the same result in their first three games.

West Brom drew 1-1 in their first three games in 2004/05, Southampton won't want to remember beginning the 2001/02 campaign with three 2-0 defeats, while Aston Villa began the first Premier League season in 1992/93 with three 1-1 draws.

No team has managed four of the same result, though.
